I guess this is what you call growing up, when you’ve wrestled with your teenage angst and your early-20s apathy, and you decide that you’re in it for the long run, so you become dedicated to defeating your self-sabotaging tendencies and securing a happy future for yourself. The way it translates into the relationship realm is that you realize that you are actually trying to find a person that will treat you well, and not just right now, but even when you are forty and have two kids.

There ought to be a word for the awkwardness that sets in when you’ve neglected a friend for so long that their attempts to engage you take on the halting politeness of someone who isn’t fluent in English.
